Graduate Scholarship Application for 2017-2018

*The deadline for these applications has passed.*

This application is good for any scholarship given by the Department of Economics at the University of North Texas. By applying, you will be considered for any scholarship available and for which you meet the criteria. Scholarships for use during the 2017-2018 academic year will be awarded in April 2017. Scholarships are ONLY for (1.) current UNT graduate students in the Department of Economics, or (2.) current UNT undergraduate Economics majors who will be joining the Master's program in Economics in either summer 2017 or fall 2017. Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarship Descriptions

Alumni, faculty members, and other friends of the Department fund our scholarships. Availability of funds within a given academic year determine how many can be awarded. The Economics Department Scholarship Committee is comprised of graduate and undergraduate advisors who review all applications. The dollar value of each scholarship varies from year to year, depending upon the availability of funds. In most cases, awards range from $500 to $1,000.

The Ganga Sharada Oli Award

This is a new scholarship funded by Ashok Oli (MS '08) in honor of his parents, Ganga and Sharada Oli. This scholarship is open to new and continuing full-time graduate students in Economics. New students must meet minimum entrance standards; continuing students must meet academic performance standards of the department. Student must be an active member of World Echoes, FACES, or any other international or multicultural student organization registered with UNT that has an open membership policy.

The Faculty Scholarship in Memory of Karla Lynch

This scholarship is in memory of long-time faculty member Karla Lynch, who passed away on February 21, 2015. Karla was also an alumna of our program, earning her Master's in economics in 1992. She was a master teacher and a caring mentor, and she touched the lives of generations of students and colleagues and friends fortunate enough to have known her. The scholarship is funded by Karla's colleagues and many friends as a way of honoring her commitment to her students and to higher education in general.

The Melton-Cochran Scholarship

The Melton-Cochran Scholarship is in memory of Rosser B. "Abe" Melton (a faculty member from 1946-1975) and Kendall P. Cochran (on the faculty from 1957-1989, and department chair from 1969-1977). Melton and Cochran were both strong mentors and an inspiration to students. This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate economics major of junior standing who has completed at least 60 hours of coursework and maintains a minimum 3.5 overall grade point average.

The Tom Preston Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Tom Preston, good friend of the Department of Economics, who served as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1982-1992. The scholarship is awarded to an entering undergraduate or an entering graduate economics major. Any economics major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 is eligible. Entering undergraduate students must meet a minimum SAT score requirement of 1000 or minimum ACT score of 24 and have an overall high school GPA of at least 3.0. Entering graduate students must meet the current Economics graduate admissions standards.

The Lewis M. Abernathy Scholarship in Economics

This scholarship is named in honor of Professor Lew Abernathy (1932-2005). Dr. Abernathy served the Department from 1967 until his retirement in 1999. He was chairman from 1984 to 1994. His passion was labor education and he directed the UNT Institute for Labor and Industrial Relations and the UNT Econ Labor Education Program. This scholarship is merit based for full-time graduate or undergraduate majors in economics. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

The Rising Eagle Scholarship

This scholarship is for current economics majors who are graduating with a BA/BS/BBA in Economics and who will join the Master's program in Economics in the fall of the coming year. The number and amount of awards depend on the availability of funding.

The Verizon Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to one outstanding graduate student. To be eligible, currently enrolled students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on all college work. If the applicant is a student who wishes to enter the program and is not a transferring graduate student, an undergraduate overall GPA of 3.5 is required. Our alumni who work for Verizon fund this scholarship.

Catherine and Virgil Rogers Economics Scholarship

This scholarship is the result of a very generous gift by Catherine Ann and Virgil E. Rogers to establish a scholarship for undergraduate majors in the Department of Economics. To be eligible, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on all college work. The scholarship is merit based for full-time undergraduates in economics.

Department of Economics Graduate Scholarships for Academic Excellence

This scholarship is for outstanding graduate students in the Master's program in Economics who are making good progress towards completion of their degree. Several of these scholarships may be awarded if funds are available.

Friends of the Department of Economics From the classes of 2001-2006

This scholarship is made possible by the contributions of alumni of our masters degree programs who graduated in the classes of 2001-2006. The scholarship is merit based and is awarded to an outstanding graduate student with a minimum 3.0 average and full time enrollment status (unless they are graduating).

Faculty of the Department of Economics Scholarships

This scholarship is made possible by the contributions of current faculty members in the Department of Economics. The scholarship is merit based and is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate economics major with an outstanding academic record. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

The Aaron Wuensch Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created by members of the Department of Economics and the family and friends of Aaron Wuensch, a former graduate student in the Department of Economics who lost his life in June of 2009. This scholarship is intended to honor the memory of this outstanding student and fine young man.

William H. & Virginia W. Wallace Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Dr. William H. Wallace and his wife. Dr. Wallace was an economist and served as adjunct instructor at UNT from 2001 to 2012. He had a brilliant academic career at numerous universities, including the University of Illinois, Duke University, the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA (where he was Dean of the College of Business). He also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank, serving on the Board of Governors in Washington, DC, and as First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Dallas branch. The scholarship is open to new and continuing full-time graduate students in Economics. New students must meet minimum entrance standards; continuing students must meet academic performance standards of the department and have a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Full Time Enrollment Status:
Undergraduate students must have at least a 12-hour academic load to achieve full time enrollment status. Graduate students must be enrolled in 9 hours of graduate coursework (5000-level or higher) to be considered full time.
