This scholarship is specifically for:

  1. Current UNT graduate students in the Department of Economics.
  2. Current UNT undergraduate Economics majors newly admitted to the Master's program in Economics.

By submitting this single application, students will be considered for all graduate scholarships awarded by the Department of Economics at the University of North Texas; students do not need to specify a scholarship for which they are applying.

Eligibility

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Grades of A or B in all Economics graduate courses
  • Completed at least 9 hours of Economics graduate coursework by the end of fall 2025 OR
  • Be a UNT undergraduate entering the graduate program in Fall 2025
  • Full Time Enrollment Status: Undergraduate students must have at least a 12-hour academic load to achieve full time enrollment status. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 9 hours of graduate coursework for full time enrollment status.

Economics Department Scholarships

The Department of Economics is proud to offer a variety of scholarships that recognize academic excellence, honor the legacy of our faculty and students, and support the next generation of economists. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of alumni, faculty, and other supporters. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends on available funding. The Economics Department Scholarship Committee, which includes both graduate and undergraduate advisors, carefully reviews all applications. Scholarship amounts vary annually based on funding, with most awards ranging from $500 to $1,000.  Explore our scholarship opportunities below.

Alumni, faculty members, and other friends of the Department fund our scholarships. Availability of funds within a given academic year determine how many can be awarded. The Economics Department Scholarship Committee is comprised of graduate and undergraduate advisors who review all applications. The dollar value of each scholarship varies from year to year, depending upon the availability of funds. In most cases, awards range from $500 to $1,000.

Faculty Scholarship in Memory of Karla Lynch (Rising Eagle Scholarship)

Honoring the life and legacy of Karla Lynch, beloved faculty member and alumna, this scholarship celebrates her dedication to students and education. Funded by colleagues and friends, it supports undergraduate students who embody her commitment to learning and mentorship.

This scholarship is designed for students who are graduating with a BA, BS, or BBA in Economics and continuing into the UNT Economics Master’s program the following fall.)

William H. & Virginia W. Wallace Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship honors Dr. William H. Wallace, a distinguished economist and former Federal Reserve leader, and his wife, Virginia. Open to new and continuing full-time graduate students in Economics. Applicants must maintain a 3.5 GPA.

Economics Alumni Advisory Council Scholarship

Established by the Alumni Advisory Council (click here for information on the AAC). Susan Dadres Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of former faculty member Susan Dadres ('84, '86 MS), who passed away on May 19, 2022. Susan Dadres dedicated her professional life to education. At a time when single mothers were often unable to pursue college, she earned her master's degree from UNT and her doctorate from Southern Methodist University. She went on to teach economics as a lecturer at UNT and other universities for more than 30 years, as well as co-writing widely used economics textbooks and workbooks. She was an early pioneer of online education and developed UNT's first online economics courses, increasing educational opportunities for countless students. Throughout her life, she inspired her students and her colleagues with her commitment to teaching.

Lewis M. Abernathy Scholarship in Economics

Named for Professor Lewis Abernathy, who was a member of the Department from 1967 to 1999 and chaired the department for a decade. This merit-based scholarship supports full-time undergraduate or graduate Economics majors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Dr. Abernathy was a passionate advocate for labor education and a leader in the field.

Melton-Cochran Scholarship

The Melton-Cochran Scholarship is in memory of Rosser B. "Abe" Melton (a faculty member from 1946-1975) and Kendall P. Cochran (on the faculty from 1957-1989, and department chair from 1969-1977). Melton and Cochran were both strong mentors and an inspiration to students. This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate economics major of junior standing who has completed at least 60 hours of coursework and maintains a minimum 3.5 overall grade point average.

HOUS Scholarship

Funded by alumnus Richard Johnson (BS ’16) in honor of Drs. Hauge and Rous, this merit-based scholarship supports undergraduate or graduate students with strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 GPA).

Faculty of the Department of Economics Scholarships
Supported by the contributions of current faculty, this merit-based scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate Economics majors with exceptional academic records (minimum 3.0 GPA).

Full Time Enrollment Status:
Undergraduate students must have at least a 12-hour academic load to achieve full time enrollment status. Graduate students must be enrolled in 9 hours of graduate coursework (5000-level or higher) to be considered full time.
