Before you hit "apply," make sure you’ve crossed off these academic must-haves (with a grade of A or B, or the equivalent):
- Intermediate Microeconomic Theory
- Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory
- Calculus I (Calculus II is a bonus, but is not required!)
- Calculus-based Statistics
Complete any of these courses at UNT, or their equivalent at your university:
- DSCI 3710 (Business Statistics)
- MATH 3680 (Applied Statistics)
- MATH 4650 (Statistics)
- ECON 4630 (Data Analysis in Economics)
If you are currently completing these courses, you still can apply! Our department offers conditional admission to students who will complete their undergraduate degree and meet these criteria by the end of the spring term.
Application Materials: This is all you’ll need to submit as part of your GradCAS application:
- Full College Transcripts – We can evaluate your application using your unofficial university transcripts (note
that we must have the official transcripts sent directly from your school before you can take
classes here!) .
- GPA – We evaluate applicants holistically. Successful candidates usually have a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
- Official GRE Scores – Your GRE scores must be less than 5 years old. We can evaluate your application using your unofficial scores while awaiting official scores. A score of 300+ combined (with at least 155 on the quantitative section) is preferred. UNT’s GRE code is 6481.
- English Language Proficiency – For International applicants, make sure you meet the minimum TOEFL (79), IELTS (6.0), PTE (53), or DET (100) score requirements, or satisfy proof of English language proficiency by any of the ways listed at UNT International Admissions. We cannot offer admission without proof of English proficiency!
Bonus: Applying for Funding?
If you’re seeking funding, remember these extra materials:
- Current Resume or Vita – Showcase your relevant coursework, research projects, academic honors, volunteer experience, and leadership roles.
- Two Letters of Recommendation – Select recommenders who are familiar with your academic potential, such as faculty members, employers, or supervisors. They should be able to attest to your skills and qualifications for graduate school. Recommenders should submit their letters directly to Econ-GradAdvising@unt.edu.
Deadlines for Admission (Fall Semester Admission Only)
We are excited to welcome new students each Fall! Be sure to meet these application deadlines:
- If you’re seeking funding: February 1
- If you’re not seeking funding: June 15
For international students, see the additional information specifically for you!
IMPORTANT!
An admission decision can't be made until all your materials are submitted, the application fee has been paid, and your application has been processed by our graduate admissions team (they’re the gatekeepers!). Remember that once you apply, you’ll be able to track the progress of your application through GradCAS.
