BUSINESS ECONOMIST


Job Description:
As a Business Economist, you will research, analyze and communicate national and regional economic and
banking issues/trends for public groups, elected officials, industry groups and business leaders, official
bank visitors, the Bank’s Boards of Directors, and other members of Bank staff and senior management.


As a successful candidate, you will possess a demonstrated ability (through publications, reports or
appropriate presentations) to conduct original research in economics and to communicate effectively with
other economists. You will have experience or interest in regional analysis or energy economics or both.


You will conduct original research on the Texas Gulf Coast’s overall economy and its most important
industries. This research will be used both internally and with the public. Internally, you will be
expected to advise senior management and the Board of Directors in regional economic matters. Externally,
you will disseminate information and promote the image of the Federal Reserve Bank through various
publications, speaking engagements, and interactions with members of the economic and business communities.


Position Duties:
This position combines elements of a basic economic research and public affairs activities. You will conduct
original economic research into energy, agriculture, district banking structure, monetary theory and policy
or labor. You will maintain a working knowledge of and ability to analyze complex data and trends in the
following areas of economic research: monetary policy and macroeconomics, microeconomics and industrial
analysis, agricultural and energy economics, regional economics, fiscal policy and taxation, banking and
other financial institution issues such as payments system and finance, foreign exchange markets,
international finance markets, Texas Gulf Coast economies, and economic forecasting and modeling.


You will contribute on a regular basis to an economic newsletter on regional and energy issues intended for a
public audience, you will speak frequently to the public on issues relevant to the Bank and on the local or
national economies.


You will write portions of the local “Beige Book” submission, of the Bank President’s staff briefing for the
Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, and of the economic report to the Board of Directors.


You will write brief documents, per requests from senior management and the Board of Directors, on economic
topics related to areas of interest to the District and Branch.


You will support the Bank’s economic education efforts by participating in university symposia programs,
high school teacher workshops, and participating in the Bank’s Fed Challenge program.


Skills and Competencies:
- M.A. or Ph.D. in economics, though a Ph.D. is preferred
- Two to three years of experience in a related field
- An ability to translate economic ideas and concepts into language easily understood by the public
- Experience with regional, energy, or banking economics (a plus)
- Excellent writing skills suitable for a variety of audiences (journals, business briefings, business
  correspondence, etc.)
- Excellent public speaking skills and the ability to tailor presentations to audience type (from basic level
  to highly sophisticated and complex)
- Advanced ability to use current technology for research/analysis and presentations
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical and econometric concepts and operations.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret economic and technical journals, and financial reports.
